Reliance’s Bluemagic to use Measat-3 satellite for DTH

By Kamlesh

Reliance-Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group’s Bluemagic will use Measat-3 satellite and is planning to launch its direct-to-home (DTH) service in the last quarter of this year.Reliance has signed a deal with the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) for using the foreign satellite from the Astro Group, a source close to the company says. Measat had made its Ku-band transponders available and Isro was studying it technically to make an internal evaluation.Isro has in principle agreed to allow Measat offer its Ku-band transponders to Indian DTH operators, the source confirms. Reliance wants Measat’s eight Ku-band transponders, he adds. When contacted, Isro contract management and legal services director SB Iyer refused to comment. He had, however, told Indiantelevision earlier that the coordination with Measat was in the final stages and Isro would take a decision after a month.Reliance’s Bluemagic will be using MPEG-4 compression technology which will allow it to pack in more channels per transponder. While Kalanithi Maran’s Sun Direct has gone in for the same technology, existing DTH operators Dish TV and Tata Sky have gone in for MPEG-2 compression.Bluemagic will be using Nagravision’s conditional access solutions and the set-top boxes (STBs) will be from multiple vendors, the source adds. Nagravision, part of the Switzerland-based Kudelski Group, is a leading player in the field of conditional access for digital TV and broadband internet.Bluemagic is also tying up with US-based OpenTV, the provider of enabling technologies for advanced digital television services. Zee Group’s Dish TV has also entered into a multi-year license agreement with OpenTV which enables it to deliver a variety of advanced interactive television services, including PVRs (personal video recorders), to its subscriber base.

'IPL represents pulse of 'Youngistan'

Sports are a great window on the society” —David Halberstam, Pultizer Prize-winning author/journalist Which brings us to our biggest sports hoopla in India — IPL. On the back of millions of dollars, sinful player bids, unparalleled press coverage, star quotient, imported cheerleaders, was launched the IPL spectacle. The television ratings are big, the stadiums are packed to capacity, the team anthems jam radio airwaves & IPL is suddenly the biggest thing to hit India.

Doing Multiple Downloads

Ever wonder if you can do more than one download at a time? Well, you can! In fact, Firefox will allow multiple downloads "out of the box".

Internet Explorer, on the other hand, will only allow two simultaneous downloads. What kind of geek downloads just two files at a time? Geeze! Sure it's better than just one, but definitely a bummer if you're on a high speed connection. Well, here's a little registry hack that will boost you to a whopping 10 downloads at a time. Makes you shudder at all the power you're about to wield with that little mouse, doesn't it?

As always, registry settings are not for those with weak digital constitutions.

If you're not 100% comfortable with accessing your registry, I suggest you just stick to 2 downloads at a time or give FireFox a try. As always, you do the following at your own risk.

Also, this was only tested with IE 6, not sure what it will do with older versions.OK, that's enough covering my behind - here's the hack:

1. Hit the Start button, Run. Type in: regeditAnd hit Enter (easy so far, huh?).

2. Now, navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Internet Settings

3. Now, you'll need to right-click on a blank area in the right-hand pane and select New (only option), then DWORD value

When you do, you'll see a new key that needs a name.

You'll want to name that key:MaxConnectionsPer1_0ServerProbably best just to copy and paste that line :-)Now, double-click the key and put this in for the value:

0000000a

4. OK, almost there. You need one more DWORD value. Once again, Right-click inside of the right-hand pane and select New, DWORD value. Name this one:

MaxConnectionsPerServer

Again, copy and pasting the above would probably be best.

Double-click that new key and give it this value:

0000000a

Your two new values should look like this (note that the 0x and (10) are added by windows - don't add them to the values I just gave you):

5. Exit out of the registry editor and restart your computer. You should now be able to download up to 10 files at a time using IE. That's like 5X the fun you were having before!

Aishwarya Rai to promote latest movie at Cannes festival

NEW DELHI — Aishwarya Rai has become a regular at the Cannes Film Festival in recent years.

The Bollywood beauty has attended the annual festival in France since 2002, when her movie Devdas, a remake of an Indian classic, was shown. She has also been a jury member.

"Coming to Cannes is a great high. ... It's a beautiful city with great people and films," The Times of India newspaper quoted Rai as saying in Wednesday's editions.

"I don't get to visit many (film) festivals, but Cannes is truly one event I do try to attend each year," she said.

Her new movie Provoked, directed by Jagmohan Mundra, was to screen at the festival Thursday. Mundra said the film is a departure from Rai's usual boy-meets-girl movies.

In Provoked, Rai plays the role of Kiranjit, a woman who kills her husband after suffering torture at his hands for 10 years.

"I was immediately taken with the story and Kiranjit's character. ... I realized the importance of the film, especially for women and the issue of domestic violence," the actress said.

A former Miss World, Rai is a big star in India and has appeared in more than 30 movies. She starred in Gurinder Chadha's Bride & Prejudice in 2004.

TECHNOLOGY ARTICLES

Indian Space Research Organization becoming the right wing of NASA - NASA chief Michael Griffin said he was sorry for the ban, which America had imposed on certain space units of India.

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) chief Michael Griffin on Tuesday said he "was sorry about" American sanctions on some Indian space units.
Asked at a press conference if he would use his "good offices" to see that sanctions, which continued to be imposed on some Indian space units were lifted, he said, "I am sorry about the past. But I would certainly take forth a good word about Indian space capabilities" and Indian technical capability.
Ironically, Griffin will travel to the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram and the Sriharikota launch centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation, which continue to be on the US entity list, during his two-day visit to ISRO facilities.
The first NASA chief to visit India in three decades, Griffin visited the ISRO satellite centre on Tuesday morning and signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the inclusion of two US scientific instruments on India's first mission to the moon, chandrayaan-1.
